Laura Heine Collage 101 Workshop

Are you interested in learning how to collage with fabric?  Start your creative journey into the colorful and whimsical world of Laura Heine Collage.  In this KC Maker Collage 101 class, we’ll explore Laura’s signature process and style, use her mix of florals, patterns and vibrant imagery that come together to form a stunning fabric collage wall hanging.

There is homework for this class!  Please watch the YouTube video to help you choose a correct pattern size to begin with, prepare your fabric with Steam A Seam 2 and learn about all the materials needed for class.  We highly recommend a fabric kit from either KC Maker or Laura Heine’s website to begin your college journey. Using scraps can be incredibly overwhelming in the beginning.

Let’s dive in with Molly Molzer and start creating!  Feel free to pack a lunch and make the most of your time.  It’s bound to be a great day with a collage obsession beginning…

 NECESSARY SUPPLIES:

A purchased Laura Heine Pattern

  • Choose one of her projects that finishes UNDER a yard (under 36” in length and width)
  • “Teeny Tiny” sizes (finish 16”x20”) are ideal to start with.
  • Her table runner patterns do not teach the underlay process, so not useful for this class. But Molly is happy to explain the process if you have one, though.
  • No photocopies or sharing of patterns during class.

A Fabric Kit from either KC Maker or Laura Heine’s website. Be wary of Etsy fabric kits.

  • It takes about a full 7 day week or so to get a package from Laura Heine Fiberworks, so plan ahead.

 A Collage Fusing Mat

  • 17x 24 size is ideal. The bigger the better.
  • Laura has her own brand. Precision Fusing Mat and Appliqué Fusing Mat are also good quality.

 4 SewTite Magnets

 Serrated Scissors

  • Laura Heine has her own brand or Karen Kay Buckley (blue handle) are highly recommended.

 Stiletto and/or Tweezers

Pattern Ease or Laura Heine’s “Collage Foundation”-cut to size as stated on pattern

  • Do not trace the pattern on the foundation, even if the pattern tells you to do so.  Older patterns have an outdated process for collaging. Our class will keep you updated.

Steam A Seam 2 (not light)-see your pattern for an exact amount

  • We have a video showing how to adhere the Steam A Seam to the back of your fabric.

Rotary Cutter and Ruler to square off Steam A Seam 2 backed fabrics

 Pencil(s)

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES (helpful to bring to class, but not necessary)

Small Iron and Pressing Mat

Dryer Sheet and Washcloth for cleaning your iron

Light Box

Fabric Glue

SUPPLIES NOT NECESSARY TO BRING TO CLASS

Sewing machine (you don’t need to lug your machine to class!)

Binding fabric, quilt batting, and backing fabric

Stretched Canvas (if you choose to finish off your collage on a canvas)
