Garment Sewing 101

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

Read and understand commercial garment patterns

Choose the correct size and make simple adjustments

Cut fabric accurately and efficiently

Sew basic garment construction seams and finishes

Gain tips for fit, pressing, and professional-looking results
We’ll take the mystery out of garment sewing in a supportive, no-stress environment—perfect if you’re brand new to apparel sewing or need a refresher before tackling more advanced patterns. You’ll leave with practical skills, clearer understanding, and the confidence to continue sewing garments on your own.
No prior garment experience required—just basic sewing machine knowledge and a desire to learn!

Fabric for your size - per pattern instruction.
Sewing machine in good working order and user’s manual
Serger (optional)
All-purpose sewing thread to coordinate with fabric selected for project
Sharp fabric scissors (8” recommended)
Small thread snippers or embroidery scissors
Seam gauge
Seam ripper
Sewing pins and/or clips
Seamstress-style tape measure
Seam guide or painter’s tape
Fabric marking tools (heat or water soluble markers, chalk, or tracing paper and tracing wheels)
Rotary cutter with sharp blade
Pre-class Homework:
Make sure you know how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, and are familiar with general user’s information. Purchase the Verdun top pattern at KC Maker Studio in your size.
You can make your fabric selection during your 1st class. Instructor will be available to assist you with your selection

| Instructor Bio: | Maya Jones is a seamstress and costume designer from Pittsburgh, PA. A recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, she has come to Kansas City to be the Fiber Artist in Resident at Englewood Arts. In her own work, she specializes in historically inspired gowns and undergarment and she is passionate about cultivating a community of confident apparel sewists ready to transform their closets. |
