Fussy and Fabulous - Magic Squares Workshop

In this innovative workshop, Kelly will teach the participant how to strategically cut patchwork from a single regularly-occurring, repetitive, mirror-image print fabric (discussed specifically in the Trunk Show at KC Maker on 1/26/25 OR contact Kelly at kelly@kellyquilter.com) to create a variety of unique square-shaped blocks. That's right:  one fabric can allow you to create a quilt where no two blocks are the same....unless you choose to make them the same.  It really is magical and delightfully surprising to see such a visually-varied set of blocks emerge from a single fabric!  C'mon!  Let's make some quilty magic together!!

Supply List

Sewing machine:  clean, oiled, ready to sew.  Bring your ¼” foot, bobbins, power cord, foot pedal and 80/12 machine needles.

Thread:  Neutral color machine-piecing thread, 50 wt

Notions:  pins, seam ripper, seam roller (optional, yet helpful), thread snips, any other favorite notions

Rotary cutter: 28mm recommended – put in a fresh blade for best results

Cutting Mat:   approximately 18” x 24”; a smaller mat, like a 12” x 18” mat or a 14” x 14” mat will work also.

Mechanical Pencils: “lead” and white chalk (such as Bohin or SewLine)

MAGIC Premium Quilting & Crafting spray:  to prep fabric prior to the workshop.  Generously spritz your fabric (damp, not drippy wet) and press with a dry iron on cotton setting.  This adds “body” to your fabric (and, incidentally, also pre-shrinks it), making it easier to both cut and sew your block pieces.

Other Rotary Cutting Rulers:  A “medium-sized” ruler such as 6”x12” or 8”x12” or 3”x12”.

Companion Angle Ruler:  Please bring THIS brand.  I like how it’s marked, and it will make your life (and mine) easier. Make sure your Companion Angle ruler makes up to 10” finished blocks.  Be sure to add some kind of “anti-skid” material to the wrong side of your ruler! The Companion Angle ruler is available at KC Maker Studio.

Fabric: 3 ½ yards of “Focus Fabric” (a regularly-occurring, repetitive, mirror-image print) for the blocks: We will discuss what this means at the Trunk Show / presentation at KC Maker Studio on January 26, 2025, and there will be several examples of in-stock fabrics to show you.  There is no way to know for sure how many blocks you’ll get from your fabric because there are too many variables (scale of print, distance of lengthwise repeat, number of crosswise repeats, etc.  Therefore, the only fabric you’ll bring to the workshop is the regularly-occurring, repetitive print.  You will receive setting options with some yardage recommendations at the workshop.

If you find a fabric and wonder whether or not it would work for this technique, feel free to text (913-484-5496) or email (kelly@kellyquilter.com) a photo to me.  I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

I’m looking forward to seeing you in this magical, fun workshop!
