Fussy and Fabulous - Magic Stars Workshop

Do you remember looking into a kaleidoscope and marveling at the amazing, unique
designs that formed with the slightest turn of the barrel?  If so, how would you like to
create beautiful kaleidoscopic Six-Pointed Stars out of fabric?  Kelly will guide you
through the cutting and piecing process to create eye-popping stars that will dazzle and
amaze you and your quilt-loving friends. Kelly will also discuss and demonstrate how to
turn your stars into rectangles and setting your rectangles into a quilt top.

Supply List

Sewing machine:  clean, oiled, ready to sew.  Bring your ¼” foot, bobbins, power cord, foot pedal and 80/12 machine needles.

Thread:  Neutral color machine-piecing thread, 50 wt

Notions:  pins, seam ripper, seam roller (optional, yet helpful), thread snips, any other favorite notions

Rotary cutter: 28mm recommended – put in a fresh blade for best results

Cutting Mat:   approximately 18” x 24”; a smaller mat, like a 12” x 18” mat or a 14” x 14” mat will work also.

Mechanical Pencils: “lead” and white chalk (such as Bohin or SewLine)

MAGIC Premium Quilting & Crafting spray:  to prep fabric prior to the workshop.  Generously spritz your fabric (damp, not drippy wet) and press with a dry iron on cotton setting.  This adds “body” to your fabric (and, incidentally, also pre-shrinks it), making it easier to both cut and sew your block pieces.

Other Rotary Cutting Rulers:  A “medium-sized” ruler such as 6”x12” or 8”x12” or 3”x12”.

Kellyquilter Templates (project set):
Includes 2 templates (D4, and HET8) plus anti-skid material. Price: $14 (tax included) payable to Kelly (cash or credit / debit card, please) at the beginning of class.
This kit is priced at >20% below retail.  The templates are mandatory for each participant.  If you already own one or both, bring them.  If you have only one, bring it and the other will be available for purchase in class.

Fabric:
“Focus Fabric” (a regularly-occurring, repetitive, mirror-image print) for the stars:
4-block project:  1 1/2 yards6-block project:  2 yards12-block project:  3 1/2 yards
(The staff at KC Maker Studio can assist you in finding this type of print.)    There is no way to know for sure how many blocks you’ll get from your fabric because there are too many variables (scale of print, distance of lengthwise repeat, number of crosswise repeats, etc.  I anticipate the amounts given are ample, and you’ll likely have leftover, yet it’s impossible to know for sure.  You will receive yardage requirements for the quilt setting at the workshop.

If you find a fabric and wonder whether or not it would work for this technique, feel free to text (913-484-
5496) or email (kelly@kellyquilter.com) a photo to me.  I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!
OTHER FABRIC:  please bring approximately ¼ yard OR a fat quarter of “scrap” fabric (anything is fine –this is a great time to get rid of an  “ugly” fabric that you no longer love).  Be sure to “prep” this fabric, too.
Thanks!
I’m looking forward to seeing you in this magical, fun workshop!    Kelly
