Fearless Feathers Workshop

Fearless Feathers: Building Confidence in Longarm Quilting

Feather designs bring timeless elegance and movement to any quilt. In this lecture and demo-style longarm class, students will learn how to draw, plan, and stitch beautiful feather motifs in a variety of styles ranging from traditional and formal to loose and contemporary.

Learn from expert Handi Quilter Educator, Vicki Kerkvliet while building confidence with the foundational techniques behind successful feather quilting. Through guided instruction and live demonstrations, students will explore how feathers are constructed, how to create smooth flowing designs, and ways to incorporate feathers into both borders and allover quilting layouts.

Topics may include:
• Basic feather spines
• Formal feathers
• Informal feathers
• Non-backtracking feather techniques
• Using feathers as overall quilting designs
• Tips for flow, spacing, and symmetry

Whether you are new to feather quilting or looking to refine your design skills, this class will help you better understand the structure and versatility of one of quilting’s most classic motifs.

Please note: This is a lecture/demo class and does include hands-on quilting time. Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and sketching materials for note-taking and design practice.

Instructor: Vicki Kerkvliet
Instructor Bio: Vicki Kerkvliet comes from a long line of quilters and began her own quilting journey in 2000 when she enrolled in a beginner quilting class. As an elementary school teacher she set the goal of piecing one quilt top a year in-between her teaching responsibilities. Vicki’s dream of owning a longarm machine was realized in 2011 with the purchase of an HQ Avanté® with Pro-Stitcher®. She currently quilts for customers and for herself on an HQ Amara® with Pro-Stitcher®. After 27 years in the elementary education profession, she joined the Handi Quilter education team and is thrilled to merge her love of teaching with her love of quilting in a new career path. Vicki now serves as the educator coordinator. She sets beginning quilters at ease and encourages experienced quilters to enjoy their quilting journey while exploring new options. Vicki is a member of the Starlight Quilters Guild in Kansas City. She has two adult sons and enjoys traveling with her husband to explore national parks.
