Mega Dream Bag

Need a handy bag to take your extra sewing notions and supplies to classes?  This bag measures 9” tall, 10.25" wide, 6" deep, 15.5" at top when closed.  Handles drape and the zipper opens past the edge of the bag, allowing full access to everything inside.  You can customize the pockets that line the interior – and fold the top down for easy access.  (What will you carry in your bag?...pens, notepad, seam ripper, scissors, rulers, fat quarters, phone charger, aspirin, band-aids, maybe even some chocolate?)  I will provide you with cutting labels, short-cuts, tips to make this bag easier (and additional option for more pockets on outside of bag), and my lessons learned.  I suggest purchasing a handbag zipper, this bag really deserves it!

Supply List:

Mega Dream Bag Pattern - see back for fabric requirements
Zipper - we recommend a 20" or longer #5 zipper by Annie with double pulls.  The zipper can be cut down to size during the project. I would not recommend a 3mm zipper, known as dress/skirt zipper, it’s zipper tape measures only ¾” wide and is much more difficult to install.
All fabric materials, thread and wound bobbin(s) -  (match to Outside Top fabric)
Sewing machine with power cord & foot pedal
Sewing Feet:  ¼” foot, Zipper foot, Reg/Zigzag foot
Size 90/14 needle, new, I use Superior Topstitch Titanium (has longer eye)
Fabric Marking pens – Frixion & dark fine lined Sharpie
Favorite notions: Scissors, Tweezers, Stiletto, Seam Ripper, pins, wonder clips
Pressing Cloth, iron optional
Rotary Cutter with Sharp Blade
Rulers – 6x12”, 6x24” and  3x3”
Mat – 12x24"
Seams-Flat Pressing Bar &  Roller to press seams  open - optional

Homework

Make a copy of pattern directions to take notes during class, or bring paper and pen.

If you like lots of pockets, cut an extra pair of pocket pieces and we’ll attach them on the outside of the bag, (of course, you will need more SF101 than is listed on the pattern).

Attached Cutting Label worksheet – to help keep your pieces organized.

Print off page of cutting labels so you can prepare your fabric before the class date.  This is a fun, detailed bag that takes about 3-4 hours of fabric preparation and 7-8 hours to assemble.

Cutting & Fusing -

Before class:  Please have fabric cut out according to directions on page 1.  For any pieces that need to be fused to Pellon SF101, I suggest rough cutting fabric 1/4” - 1/2” longer & wider, then you can trim to correct size after you adhere SF101 interfacing (because there can be some shrinkage in this process).

Follow the Cutting Directions at top of page 1, except for zipper tab.

UPDATE:  - cut zipper tab 2.5” x 3.5” for #5 handbag zipper

If you want more pockets on the outside of your bag, cut 2 additional pocket pieces (you will need more SF101).

Plan your pocket “customization” – see step 4G.  What will you put in your pockets?

Read through the pattern

Sewing machine in good working order - have good knowledge of your machine

Bring drink, snacks or lunch, if you wish.

Please call if you’re new to fusing SF101 woven fusible interfacing or have questions about using directional fabrics.
