Garment Sewing 101

If you're interested in learning to sew garments, this is the class for you. We'll offer small group instruction to a max of 8 students per session, starting with the basics and graduating to increasing their sewing skills with each project. Students will work at their own pace to complete 2+ projects during the 6 week session. Classes meet for 2 hours per week. Each participant must have a sewing machine. We have a limited number of sewing machines available to rent during class sessions, so if you would like to rent one, please check with us for availability prior to registering.

This class can be repeated and in subsequent classes the participant can choose their projects and the instructor will be available to mentor them throughout.

This class is best for ages 16 and above.

Supply List:

Carolyn Pajamas pattern or Martin Pants pattern (available at KC Maker Studio)

Fabric for your size - per pattern instructions

Sewing machine in good working order and user’s manual

All-purpose sewing thread to coordinate with fabric selected for project

Sharp fabric scissors (8” recommended)

Small thread snippers or embroidery scissors

Seam gauge

Seam ripper

Sewing pins and/or clips

Seamstress-style tape measure

Seam guide or painter’s tape

Point turner

Fabric markers (removeable)

Rotary cutter with sharp blade and quilting ruler (useful, but not necessary for most garment sewing)

Pre-class Homework:

Make sure you know how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, and are familiar with general user’s information.

Purchase the Carolyn Pajamas pattern or Martin Pants pattern at KC Maker Studio in your size.

Purchase fabric yardage to make either the full-length pajama pants or shorts.

Pre-wash your fabric in the manner you plan to wash the completed garment.

NOTE:  The pajama pants pattern suggests French seaming.  This is not a beginning garment sewing technique in my opinion.  It is not difficult, but rather time consuming.  If you choose to make your pants with French seams, it will be my pleasure to help you, but you may not progress to a second garment as quickly as others who finish the seams as I did on the class sample (edged on a serger).
